The Muslim Family

The Muslim Family
In Islam, the family is not a temporary bond but a great trust and a tremendous responsibility—especially in times filled with trials, when values shift from day to day and media compete to shape minds and morals. The greatest pressure falls upon the Muslim family, because raising children upon faith, safeguarding them from doubts and destructive desires, monitoring their character and conduct, and being righteous parents and role models at home have never been more vital or critical. Thus, the true role of a father is not merely to be a provider, but to be an exemplary father. There is no value in being known as a great man outside the home while chaos and failure reign within it. True leadership begins at home—within the family and among one’s children—where it is most needed, especially at a time when children may follow the religion and behaviour of their friends. As the poet Hafiz Ibrahim said: “The mother is a school—if you prepare her well, you prepare a nation of noble character and generations of righteous people.” If our Muslim mothers are only good at cooking, baking, and scrolling through TikTok, what can we expect from the next generation? My dear sisters, to truly know Islam, you must seek knowledge—and the times we live in have never made learning the religion easier: online, from the comfort of our homes. Allah (SWT) has already granted you softer hearts than men; all that remains is to nourish them with the right content. Feed your minds with what is good, for the mind is like a sponge—the more good you absorb, the greater its impact upon the heart. Remember that a mother’s supplication for her children, offered with qalbin salīm—a sound, pure heart—is never rejected. Remember that after Allah (SWT) and His Messenger ﷺ, the people most deserving of your obedience, respect, and kindness are your beloved parents. By Allah, your success depends upon their pleasure. It may be that the trial Allah (SWT) has chosen for you resembles that of Ibrahim (AS), where you may be the reason your parents are guided to Islam. Consider the story of ‘Umar ibn al‑Khaṭṭāb, who during a night patrol heard a woman instructing her daughter to mix milk with water to increase profit. The daughter replied, “If ‘Umar does not see us, then the Lord of ‘Umar sees us.” Deeply moved, ‘Umar married her to his son, and from her lineage emerged the noble Caliph ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al‑‘Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him). Read the biography of ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al‑‘Aziz, for a single good deed can lead to a lifetime of greatness. So, my dear brothers and sisters, a home that plants faith, nurtures piety, and instils consciousness of Allah will not fear the corruption of the times. But homes that abandon family responsibility and leave the upbringing of children to screens and peers will harvest regret that yields no benefit. As our Prophet ﷺ said: “Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you will be questioned about his flock.” Fill your homes with the remembrance of Allah by establishing the five daily prayers and recitation of the Qur’an. Build wise and compassionate dialogue with your children—without harshness or neglect. Monitor what they watch and download, build trust so they turn first to you as parents, and teach them honour and pride in their belonging to Islam.
